What is Snappy Hip Syndrome or “Dancer’s Hip”?
Snapping Hip Syndrome (SHS) has many different names such as Dancer’s Hip, Iliopsoas tendinitis, or Coxa Saltans. It can sometimes be a painful annoyance that occurs during activity or when moving the hip in a specific direction. The 2 main types of SHS are external and internal.
External vs. Internal Hip Syndrome
In an external type, it is due to the iliotibial band tendon snapping over the outside of the hip joint, and in an internal type (dancer’s hip), it results from the iliopsoas tendon moving improperly over structures in the hip.

In a simplified way of thinking, SHS can be caused by our body’s muscle tightness, weakness in our lower body, and general imbalances in our muscles and joints. All of these imbalances result in improper and inefficient movements and this results in our body wearing down much faster and having more pain after each repetitive exercise movement.
