Biofeedback is a technique used by physical therapists to assess and regulate various body functions. During biofeedback sessions, patients are connected to electrical sensors through myoMuscle™ software, which gathers valuable data about the body’s activity.

Using this information, your physical therapist can guide you to make subtle adjustments—like relaxing specific muscles—to reduce pain and enhance function. Biofeedback empowers patients to improve their health and physical performance by developing greater control over their bodies.

How Does Biofeedback Work?

The myoMuscle™ software module is a powerful and advanced tool designed to process neuromuscular and kinesiological data captured by our Ultium-EMG sensors, as well as other legacy EMG systems. It synchronizes real-time data into a comprehensive analysis, providing detailed insights into muscle performance.

Our licensed physical therapists in Bay Ho, San Diego, Alpine, CA, and surrounding areas use various biofeedback methods tailored to your specific condition and goals. These methods may be combined for optimal results and include:

  • Muscle Contraction: Sensors placed on your skeletal muscles via electromyography (EMG) monitor electrical activity related to muscle contractions.
  • Breathing (Respiratory Biofeedback): Bands around your abdomen and chest track breathing patterns and respiratory rate.
  • Brain Waves: Electroencephalograph (EEG) sensors placed on your scalp monitor brain wave activity.
  • Heart Rate: Measured either by sensors on fingers and earlobes using photoplethysmography (detecting blood volume changes) or by sensors on wrists, torso, and chest via electrocardiography (ECG) to track heart rate variability.
  • Temperature: Sensors on fingers and feet monitor skin blood flow through temperature changes, which can reflect stress levels. Relaxation techniques may be used to help regulate this.
  • Sweat Gland Activity: Electrodermograph (EDG) sensors on fingers, palms, or wrists measure skin perspiration and sweat gland activity.

How Can Biofeedback Benefit You?

Biofeedback offers numerous advantages as a non-invasive method to monitor your body’s functions and identify where adjustments in muscle movement are needed to improve overall function. Often, biofeedback can reduce or even eliminate the need for medications or surgery by addressing the root cause of your condition. This allows our physical therapists to create highly personalized treatment plans that target the core issue.

Biofeedback is especially beneficial for women who cannot take medications during pregnancy, providing a safe, natural, and effective way to relieve pain and restore optimal body function. More broadly, biofeedback empowers you to gain better control over your body and health, aiding recovery from a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional conditions.
